  • The European Championship

    Wednesday, May 13th, 2009

The UEFA European Football Championship is held ever four years during the summer months when the domestic football leagues around Europe have their break. Unsurprisingly the competition consists of team made up from Europe who qualify for the competition by finishing first or second in one of seven qualifying groups. The football authorities seed the teams and then draw the groups, so this means the big boys of European football are kept apart until the later rounds.

Betting on the championship is ideal as it is two years from the last Football World Cup and two years before the next one. So it gives the opportunity for people to bet on a major football tournament in the preceding years between World Cups.

The competition begins in a league format. Four groups of four are drawn and then the top two teams after three matches go on to the quarter-finals, where the competition develops in to a knockout tournament.

There are plenty of opportunities to bet on the Euro Championships. Anyone one of a number of the top teams could win the tournament. One of the pre-tournament favorites does usually win the trophy. They are installed as favorites before the competition so the odds on them winning can be short in some cases. However there have been a couple of major shocks in the championships. Greece amazingly won the tournament in 2004 after overcoming the much fancied Portugal in the final. They were 150-1 to win Euro 2004 before it kicked off. And even more shockingly Denmark won in 1992. The Danes were only in the competition as Yugoslavia had to pull out due to the Yugoslav War.

You could also place a bet on who will end up as the top scorer. The top scorers for the past few championships have been Spain’s David Villa (4 in 2008), Czechoslovakia’s Milan Baros (5 in 2004), Serbia’s Savo Milosevic and the Netherland’s Patrick Kluivert (5 in 1998). So the top scorer does not score a crazy amount of goals. In fact the maximum number of games a player can play in the championship is six. So your best bet to pick the top scorer would be a team likely to go far in the competition as they have more opportunities to score. However the competition is tough in the final stages and as such scoring in the game can sometimes be low. So a good bet would be to look for a group with a couple of weaker teams in, who are likely to ship a lot of goals. Then find the star team in that group and then bet on their star striker to score the most goals in the European Football Championships. They do not have to be the favourites or even one of the best teams in the competition.

  • 2009 EPT Monte Carlo High Rollers Event

    # 2009 EPT Monte Carlo High Rollers Event

The Grand Final was not the only going on at the EPT Monte Carlo. There was also a €25,500 High Rollers event that drew some of the strongest players from across the globe.

    ## High Rollers Get a Chance to Shine

The Grand Final was not the only going on at the EPT Monte Carlo. There was also a €25,500 High Rollers event that drew some of the strongest players from across the globe. Only the final table of 8 players would receive a payout at this event.

    ## Tony G Confident About Chances

Tony G was near the top of the leader board for most of the event. He finished Day 1 6th in chips and was so confident on his ability to win the event that he auctioned off 1% of his action on his staking site ChipMeUp. By the end of Day 2, Tony entered the final table 2nd in chips behind only Vanessa Rousso.

    ## Rousso Strong at Final Table

The final table of the high rollers event included William Thorson, Andrew Feldman, David Steicke, Tony G, and Vanessa Rousso. Rousso has been playing strong poker lately as she recently won the NBC National Heads-Up Championships. She held or shared the chip lead for most of the final table.

    ## Rousso Gets a Challenge

Three handed play saw Randy Dorfman, Rousso, and Tony G square off. Rousso would eventually lose the chip lead to Randy Dorfman. Tony G would hang in there and keep things interesting but would eventually falter and bust out in 3rd place. Dorfman would chip away at Rousso’s stack and would leave her with just.

Rousso would come roaring back when she doubled up after flopping two pair with 5-7. She would then catch runner-runner straight to pull back to even. Dorfman then made a huge check-raise blunder when he moved all in on a board of A-2-A-10 with only 6-5. Rousso held A-4 and Rousso took a massive chip lead.

    ## Rousso Takes it Down

The final hand saw Dorfman move all-in with K-5 on a 3-9-8-5-K board. Rousso called with a 7-6 and her straight was good enough to win her the High Roller’s title. Rousso would take home € 720,000 after yet another strong finish. Rousso is beginning to prove herself as a strong NL pro. It will be interesting to see if she is able to parlay this into a strong run at the upcoming World Series of Poker.

  • Scotty Nguyen - Great or a Jerk?

    # Scotty Nguyen - Great or a Jerk?

Scotty Nguyen has not been without his share of controversy over the last couple of years. What should you do of it?

First, he imploded at the 2007 WSOP Main Event to finish in 11th place after making a crucial mistake against Phillip Hilm. He clearly went on tilt after the hand and ended up busting short of the final table.

The next year, Nguyen would go on to win the $50,000 WSOP H.O.R.S.E. World Championship, but not after some drunken tirades towards eventual second place finisher Michael DeMichelle. A lot of people lost respect for Scotty after his escapades at that final table and many have begun to question his overall greatness.

    Scotty Nguyen during WSOP 2008

For many years, Scotty has been considered the prince of poker. He has used his charm and customary “baby” expression to entertain and befriend many players. He is very gracious to fans in the hallway and is always willing to sign autographs and take pictures with fans.

Also, there has been many times he has taken a bad beat at the table from clearly inferior players, but he takes it in stride and a smile.

The 2007 WSOP and 2008 H.O.R.S.E. events are unfortunate blips on Scotty’s reputation, but they can be explained. Many players have succumbed to the pressure of the Main Event and have made asses of themselves. Look at Havad Khan in 2007.

He made such a spectacle of himself that rules were changed and unofficially dubbed with his name. Also, Scotty made a clear misstep that he probably felt cost him the Main Event. This type of pressue can be overwhelming, regardless of the caliber of player.
